#MasterYourCreativity: uniting business and creativity to transform a passion into a job

Commitment and hard work but also fun, laughs, moments to remember and challanges to overcome: Tonia Petrillo tells us about the Master “Gestione della Produzione Cinematografica e Televisiva”   Curiosity and passion are the two key factors that made me want to enter the film and television industry. After achieving a Degree in Economy and Management I felt the need for a change of “field” and a will to acquire concrete expertise in the audio-visual sector to transform my passion into a concrete job. Why this Master? To understand and study the fascinating film and television industry and try to become part of it. My idea was to combine in my educational path the world of business, strategic analysis, of numbers and charts with the world of creativity, culture and entertainment: two different souls that I have always been passionate about and that I aspired to combine even in my professional experience. I was looking for a Master that would satify my expectations and after several evaluations, choosing LUISS Creative Business Center’s Master in “Gestione della Produzione Cinematografica e Televisiva” prooved to be the best possible choice I could have made. The learning process guarantees a merger of technical and artistic skills with managerial competencies, fundamental for accessing the audio-visual production chain. Una foto pubblicata da LUISS Business School (@luissbusiness) in data: 28 Apr 2016 alle ore 03:40 PDT Months of daily commitment, hard work, but also fun, loughs, moments to remember and challenges to overcome; a place where you can learn how to manage difficulties, cultivate your talent and grow both professionally and personally. The learning process enabled me initially to enhance my General Management knowledge, before entering into the world of creativity. The purpose? develop creative and managerial skills, creative expression and entrepreneurial attitude. //   Having the possibility of coming into contact with leading figures of this industry is a unique experience: Gennaro Nunziante, Pino Innocenti, Nicola Guaglianone, Spephen McPherson are just some of the screenwriters, directors and producers that during these months have enriched my specialization path in this field. In the last weeks, as a conclusion to the educational activities of the Master, we had the opportunity of attending intensive sessions with the most prominent Italian production companies such as: Lux Vide, Pepito Produzioni and Rai Fiction. //   The level of professionalism, the guest lectures, the Labs, the individual and group drills and the Masterclasses guarantee a direct and in-depth knowledge of the field, its demands and its main players. I am certain that this experience will prove to be my key for entering the television industry: my ambition is to become a fully competent professional, capable of carrying out high-level of responsibility functions in the audio-visual production field. My advice for those who want to undertake this path? To have motivation, passion, curiosity and perseverance to pursue their dreams. Good luck! Discover the Master 27/06/2016

LUISS Business School hosts the GBO - Global Business Opportunities programme for the first time in Italy

LUISS Business School is glad to host the programme known as GBO - Global Business Opportunities that will take place in Italy, from July 15 to August 1 2016, for the first time since its foundation. GBO is an educational and cultural programme aimed to enhance working groups among youth from different countries and cultures, in order to identify business opportunities and develop entrepreneurial/personal/interpersonal skills. The Italian edition of the programme is organised by the CSR Division of Al Ahli Holding Group, based in Dubai, LUISS Business School, and the LUISS Business School Alumni Association. Al Ahli Holding Group is a UAE privately held company founded more than 40 years ago. The group has approximately 9,000 employees and generates several billions of dollars of revenues every year. Its HQ is located in Dubai taking care of a diverse portfolio of activities ranging from real estate to turnkey construction, from engineering products to shopping malls and retail, from cement to printing, and plastic manufacturing, up to media and entertainment, which has recently become the core business of the company thanks to important strategic alliances, such as with Marvel. The GBO programme is an exciting learning and life experience for the students, who have an opportunity to meet top business and academic leaders, to visit corporations, to widen their network in a multi-ethnic and multinational environment with an aim to learn how to successfully start and operate a business with high social impact. The mission of the programme is to provide the 25 to 30 year old students with knowledge and tools to start and run their own business, and to bridge the gap between the Arab region and other cultures in order to promote a profitable link between future Arab leaders and the rest of the world. This year’s GBO candidates are from Argentina, Jordan, and UAE, the latter being present with a large number of students from Khalifa University of Abu Dhabi, a non-profit institution supported by the UAE Government and entirely owned and financed by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, with a strong focus on some sectors, such as ICT, aerospace, logistics, energy, and healthcare. The distinctive feature of GBO Italy is the substantial involvement of the LUISS Business School’s alumni, since the school engaged former MBAs as speakers in the educational process. The new Alumni Association has an important role in organising and managing the programme. In particular, thanks to the patronage and support of the City Hall of Spoleto (Umbria), part of the programme will be held outdoors in order to leverage the learning experience of the students. After having divided the class in teams, each of them has to develop its own business plan during the programme with the support of the mentors. On August 1, the teams will present their projects at LUISS Business School to the jury that will assess the level of innovation, sustainability, and the capability to generate high social impact. The winning team will receive an award of cash and services in order to launch the multinational and multi-ethnic start-up with a sound business plan. 14/09/2016

Test yourself: Career Service and MBA Career Day

As every year, on June 24 we are going to offer an extraordinary opportunity of exposure and networking to our MBA students: the "MBA Career Day". The event will host 14 international companies which will meet our MBA students through 30 minutes one-to-one interviews from different business industries. The attending companies are: American Express, BNL-BNP Paribas, Deloitte, Dorna, Elica, Findus, General Motors, Grand Vision, Horton International, iGuzzini, KPMG, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Philip Morris, Wind. This is a unique opportunity for our MBAs, also considering the “numbers”: 14 companies, 30 interviewers for 30 students, for a total of about 120 interviews in one afternoon. The event will start at 12:30 p.m. with a networking lunch with students and companies. At 2:00 p.m., HR managers will start one-to-one interviews with pre-selected students. These 30 minutes interviews will be the first step of a further recruitment process. The MBA Career Day is part of the talent management path that the Career Service team has been building from the first day of the Programme. After career coaching meetings, CV revision and mock interviews, students are now ready to introduce themselves to the job market and test themselves with structured recruitment processes. This is just the first step, but it is definitely an important occasion to leave their comfort zone. We are sure that our talents will give their best and we would like to wish Good Luck to each one of them! "It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare. It is because we do not dare that they are difficult" (Seneca). 24 June 2016

The Learning Tours: deepening the European and Italian climate for doing business

The Learning Tours are activities designed for - and with - international schools or companies willing to get acquainted with the European and Italian climate for doing business   The scope of the Learning Tours is to enhance knowledge about the economic potential, business,
rules and regulatory frameworks. Lecturers, guest speakers and industry representatives will help participants understanding the competitive environment, opportunities and threats, and main aspects of doing business in the EU and in Italy. Each Learning Tour is composed ad-hoc, following the request of the groups and their interests for specific topics. Groups can design their tour with seminar sessions, aimed to introduce participants to the European and Italian business and regulatory context (examples are: business modeling and value innovation in Italy; cultural dimensions of doing business in Italy and in the EU; branding and brand management in Italy; food & wine; Tourism; luxury and fashion; the Italian motor industry); keynote speeches by industry representatives (either on campus or at the company sites); company visits organized throughout Italy to deepen the understanding of the seminar topics; finally social or cultural activities.  In May and June 2016, the Learning Tour activity has welcomed, as in the past years, two groups of MBA and EMBA students of Bellarmine University and East Tennessee State University. The schools have opted to focus on seminar session, aimed at deepening the general EU environment, the cultural and characteristics of doing business in Italy, the marketing of Made in Italy and the value innovation approach of italian entrepreneurs.   The Learning Tour Experience //   //   Discover more 21 June 2016

You can tell a lot about how people face life based on how they play football

«We played with character, passion, and willingness to go beyond our capabilities»: our former MBA student Johnny Velasquez told us his experience at the Italy MBA Football Cup, the competition between business schools in which the LUISS MBA team participated on June 11-12, 2016   A very good friend once told me: “You can tell a lot about how people face life based on how they play football”. Surprised by the uncanny truth in this remark, I started to observe people’s behaviour when playing football. Those with a more rational approach to life tend to prefer being playmakers; others live life by putting their heart and soul onto every challenge and prefer to play as defenders or defensive midfielders; others enjoy taking risks and choose to play as forwards or full backs; some are built to be team leaders and sacrifice to keep the team together in adverse situations. This year, our team had the right blend of styles complementing each other to make our team highly competitive. One game after another, we played with character, passion, and willingness to go beyond our capabilities. We built momentum and worked together as a team to keep ourselves motivated. We adapted to each other even if we hadn’t all met at the beginning of the tournament; after all, we spoke the same language: a shared passion for football! As a result, I learned our University has an exceptional group of Alumni with a winning mentality. Our team established a solid reputation among all the competing universities in the 2016 MBA Cup edition. After this year’s participation, any team competing in the MBA Cup will know that within the DNA of every LUISS Alumni there is thirst for victory; to beat us you will have to compete fino alla fine. Certainly I can state that you can tell a lot about LUISS Business School based on how the School plays football. Gallery Pictures by Simone Ianni, former MBA

MASTIS Project: establishing modern master-level studies in information systems

How to create new paths of master on information systems? The story of the first MASTIS project workshop   From 7 to 9 June 2016 the first LUISS MASTIS project workshop was held that involved the participation of the LUISS Business School as a key role among the European partners. MASTIS project is funded by the European Union within the framework of Capacity-Building actions of the Erasmus programme + that has the aim to create new paths of master information systems at the University of Ukraine and Montenegro. The workshop is part of the activities of the first work package of the project and is focused on the identification of existing educational pathways and approaches adopted for training on the information systems in the different countries represented in the project. Representatives from universities and professional associations of France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, Ukraine and Montenegro, have worked for three days at viale Romania campus, alternating with moments of networking sessions and interactive sessions. The debate between the project partners focused on the requirements for the design of information systems and Master level courses were discussed topics ranging from skills to teaching methods, through the Exchange and sharing of experiences on existing practices and training needs in the various countries. The activities of the workshop started with the analysis of the existing programmes in the field of information systems and reference was made to the contents of Eduglopedia, the portal that collects information systems courses and curricula. The project partners were compared on different orientations that characterize the paths in this field of study. In particular the Ukrainian partners and Eastern Europe have shown a greater orientation to the topics of computer science, while European partners emphasized the multidisciplinary character of subjects typical of a managerial approach. The increasing pervasiveness of digital technologies brings change in the ways in which people and organizations perform. Many of these technologies have spread beyond the borders of the technical and operational organizational units, to contaminate other areas and grow accordingly in the market demand for new professional profiles, capable of breaking disciplinary silos and to leverage on digital to bring innovation in organizations. As a result, MASTIS project members launched a reflection on new skills that the labour market is expected to fill, not necessarily technical, but that require involving meaningful contact with digital technologies. In support of the discussion it was illustrated by AICA, one of the project partners, the European framework e-CF, of which the Association will take into account the definition of a questionnaire for data collection from firms of Ukraine and Montenegro. A second theme widely discussed during the workshop focused on innovation and the updating of teaching methods in order to enrich the learning experience of students and to prepare them to meet the challenges that universities face constantly by the evolving labour market. During the workshop there were presented and discussed  relevant experience on innovation educational practices from a managerial point of view, technological, pedagogical and didactic. In this context, the team of LUISS presented recent initiatives involving the use of tools and digital platforms for collaborative learning and the development of the Massive Open Online Courses (eg. From International Relations to Global Politics). Professor Marlei Pozzebon of HEC Montreal and FGV San Paolo, visiting the Department of business and Management, has been invited by the consortium to present her experience with transformative learning. This educational approach has been applied in practice through an interactive session in which participants tried to "transform" the syllabus of their courses, reflecting with colleagues on the feasibility and the limits of the possible choices. Transformative learning is not theoretical or practical content aimed at conveying to students, but rather to stimulate awareness and critical thinking in comparison with real problems and the design of solutions. "The success of the workshop confirmed the importance of LUISS playing an active role and driving force within the project MASTIS. The project represents an interesting arena of confrontation with realities that have developed complementary capabilities and who are facing similar challenges on the grounds of the digital transformation". This is the comment of Professor Spagnoletti, Executive Program Director in IT Governance and Management (EMIT) of LUISS Business School and representative of the University project MASTIS.   Gallery   15 June 2016

#MasterYourCareer: a 360 degrees professional and personal growth

A degree in political science, a career as a professional basketball player and now the Master in Tourism Management: Stefano’s experience, student at LUISS Business School   Could you tell us about yourself and your background? My name is Stefano Rambaldi,  I am 24 years old, I graduated in political science. And I am also a professional basketball player in Italian League B and League A. During this year I played in the Italian League B Championship with the University team  "ASD LUISS", which helped me to obtain a scholarship to attend the Master. //   Why did you choose the Master in Tourism Management? I chose this Master during my stay in Dublin where, apart from sports, I got to work at Sandymount Hotel, the Hotel sponsor of the team with which I disputed the Irish Premier League of basketball. Through this experience I became interested in tourism and the Master in Tourism Management perfectly answered  my desire to grow in this field. The fact that the program was fully taught in English significantly contributed my choice. Therefore I decided to return to Italy and take the admission test  for the Master and the University's sports team selections required to obtain a scholarship. What does following this Master at LUISS Business School means to you? The Master is contributed a lot to my professional growth through a learning process based on experience: the Labs and comparison with successful managers and professionals allowed me to apply the theoretical aspects of the study on concrete case studies. //   Particularly through the Soft Skills Lab, the University is providing every tool you need to become a qualified candidate from the relational point of view . We learnt how to speak in public and to communicate effectively, to be able to carry on a trade, manage conflict, work as a team. These are all skills that I am developing and that are very useful in tasks that I do, sports in the first place. The training at 360 degrees that I received led me to discover areas of interests and professions that I did not know or that I had not taken into account. Attending a Master in LUISS Business School in fact does not only mean achieving a specialization but it also means learning how to be versatile and expand professional and personal horizons. What are your future projects? In the future I wish I could take care of experiential tourism focusing on the value of sustainability. I would love to be able to work on those services able to immerse the visitor in full and authentic activities in the local community , by being able to enhance the culture and respect the values. In the upcoming weeks I will have the opportunity to deepen these themes during the internship that I will perform at Rosewood Hotel in Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany. I will support the team Guest Relation in all communications with the guests at the pre-arrival time. I will let them know the tasks that are available to Hotel guests, their cost, their profitability and will cooperate to organize their stay based on their interests. To have the chance to participate in the activities of a great hotel reality like this, is for me a great opportunity to get involved and apply concretely on the field the teachings received so far. What advice do you give to who wants to enrol in this Master? I recommend it to anyone who is considering  joining  the Master stepping up to a path that requires a lot of effort but that will offer many opportunities  to get started , define and pursue their first career goals. In LUISS Business School you  will find a dynamic environment that can offer training and growth at 360 degrees. Therefore the tip I can give to prospective students is addressing this path with curiosity, trying to grasp all the stimuli and opportunities for personal and professional enrichment that this experience offers. Eternal MBA memories from the Eternal City of Rome

by Mariana Alejandra Jaume Torpey, LUISS MBA Class of 2015 There’s an old saying, Tutte le strade portano a Roma (All roads lead to Rome), and in my case it has become true. I fell in love with Rome seven years ago and while I was throwing a coin to the Trevi fountain I wished with all my heart to live here at least for a year… today that dream has come true. My name is Mariana Alejandra Jaume Torpey, I’m Mexican and a specialized labor law lawyer. When my father decided to put me in charge of our legal firm I realized I didn’t have any experience or knowledge to run the whole organization as a business, so I decided to do an MBA. Besides its unique and magical location, LUISS Business School seemed like the natural choice for me: it is accredited by EQUIS and I wanted a program that was focused on delivering a solid general management education and could give me access to world-leading professors. I also wanted to attend a school that pushed people to learn soft skills and to develop an international network. All of this is LUISS Business School, so the decision was obvious… and till this day it has lived up to my expectations. Coming from America, the program has also allowed me to learn more about business in Europe, thus, expanding my vision and comprehension of how the business world works. LUISS Business School offers a mixed group of high achieving students from around the world where you socialize with people from different backgrounds. All of my colleagues are at least incredibly smart. This naturally makes you improve in order to keep up with them, and also gives you a different perspective in life and in business that helps you build a strong network of future leaders. One of the great perks you get doing your MBA at LUISS Business School is that the program is in English, but because you are in Italy, eventually you either learn or improve also your Italian. Friends are not the only source of future memories: the professors are top quality and all of them are the best in their field, making themselves approachable and available for our needs. Many of their sessions will stay with me because of their sincere life advice. Besides being international, the program is also national and attended by some Italian students. With their characteristic hospitality and warmth, they help you call Italy home. Every course is perfectly structured in order to learn and understand every concept; through every case and group work assigned my leadership style and my strengths as a leader have improved like I never imagined. As a student I am very involved in all the extracurricular activities that the school proposes and offers for our improvement: a coaching program, social and sport events, and lately one of the best experiences of my life, the opportunity to attend the CASS London Symposium (an annual event organized by Cass Business School in London providing MBA students an opportunity to meet leaders of different fields of life). I was selected to attend the event and could therefore take advantage of the good international relationships that LUISS Business School has with other top business schools. This experience was rewarding and fulfilling as it gave me an opportunity to meet a real astronaut, brilliant CEOs, political figures, role models, etc. I was fortunate to enjoy London in venues like the Science Museum, Tower Bridge, Wellcome Collection, the Royal Institution, and visited different international and important companies. On the first day of the symposium, my colleagues and I won an opportunity to make a marketing pitch to London and Partners showing how much we have learned and how well we work as a team. My MBA studies have so far been an intense eight months of hard work, but also of personal growth and learning. My advice for the future members of the LUISS Business School family is to always keep your goals and desires in mind: once the program starts, it goes by fast, so keeping your goals constantly in mind is the only way to ensure they get accomplished, and believe me – with the support of the school they will. I have travelled around the world, but Rome is still the most beautiful city I have ever seen, so start your application process. Believe me, when I tell you, here you will grow but also create memories that you never expected, memories that will be impossible to forget, memories that will be like the city: eternal.
