«We played with character, passion, and willingness to go beyond our capabilities»: our former MBA student Johnny Velasquez told us his experience at the Italy MBA Football Cup, the competition between business schools in which the LUISS MBA team participated on June 11-12, 2016 A very good friend once told me: “You can tell a lot about how people face life based on how they play football”. Surprised by the uncanny truth in this remark, I started to observe people’s behaviour when playing football. Those with a more rational approach to life tend to prefer being playmakers; others live life by putting their heart and soul onto every challenge and prefer to play as defenders or defensive midfielders; others enjoy taking risks and choose to play as forwards or full backs; some are built to be team leaders and sacrifice to keep the team together in adverse situations. This year, our team had the right blend of styles complementing each other to make our team highly competitive. One game after another, we played with character, passion, and willingness to go beyond our capabilities. We built momentum and worked together as a team to keep ourselves motivated. We adapted to each other even if we hadn’t all met at the beginning of the tournament; after all, we spoke the same language: a shared passion for football! As a result, I learned our University has an exceptional group of Alumni with a winning mentality. Our team established a solid reputation among all the competing universities in the 2016 MBA Cup edition. After this year’s participation, any team competing in the MBA Cup will know that within the DNA of every LUISS Alumni there is thirst for victory; to beat us you will have to compete fino alla fine. Certainly I can state that you can tell a lot about LUISS Business School based on how the School plays football. Gallery Pictures by Simone Ianni, former MBA

How to create new paths of master on information systems? The story of the first MASTIS project workshop From 7 to 9 June 2016 the first LUISS MASTIS project workshop was held that involved the participation of the LUISS Business School as a key role among the European partners. MASTIS project is funded by the European Union within the framework of Capacity-Building actions of the Erasmus programme + that has the aim to create new paths of master information systems at the University of Ukraine and Montenegro. The workshop is part of the activities of the first work package of the project and is focused on the identification of existing educational pathways and approaches adopted for training on the information systems in the different countries represented in the project. Representatives from universities and professional associations of France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, Ukraine and Montenegro, have worked for three days at viale Romania campus, alternating with moments of networking sessions and interactive sessions. The debate between the project partners focused on the requirements for the design of information systems and Master level courses were discussed topics ranging from skills to teaching methods, through the Exchange and sharing of experiences on existing practices and training needs in the various countries. The activities of the workshop started with the analysis of the existing programmes in the field of information systems and reference was made to the contents of Eduglopedia, the portal that collects information systems courses and curricula. The project partners were compared on different orientations that characterize the paths in this field of study. In particular the Ukrainian partners and Eastern Europe have shown a greater orientation to the topics of computer science, while European partners emphasized the multidisciplinary character of subjects typical of a managerial approach. The increasing pervasiveness of digital technologies brings change in the ways in which people and organizations perform. Many of these technologies have spread beyond the borders of the technical and operational organizational units, to contaminate other areas and grow accordingly in the market demand for new professional profiles, capable of breaking disciplinary silos and to leverage on digital to bring innovation in organizations. As a result, MASTIS project members launched a reflection on new skills that the labour market is expected to fill, not necessarily technical, but that require involving meaningful contact with digital technologies. In support of the discussion it was illustrated by AICA, one of the project partners, the European framework e-CF, of which the Association will take into account the definition of a questionnaire for data collection from firms of Ukraine and Montenegro. A second theme widely discussed during the workshop focused on innovation and the updating of teaching methods in order to enrich the learning experience of students and to prepare them to meet the challenges that universities face constantly by the evolving labour market. During the workshop there were presented and discussed relevant experience on innovation educational practices from a managerial point of view, technological, pedagogical and didactic. In this context, the team of LUISS presented recent initiatives involving the use of tools and digital platforms for collaborative learning and the development of the Massive Open Online Courses (eg. From International Relations to Global Politics). Professor Marlei Pozzebon of HEC Montreal and FGV San Paolo, visiting the Department of business and Management, has been invited by the consortium to present her experience with transformative learning. This educational approach has been applied in practice through an interactive session in which participants tried to "transform" the syllabus of their courses, reflecting with colleagues on the feasibility and the limits of the possible choices. Transformative learning is not theoretical or practical content aimed at conveying to students, but rather to stimulate awareness and critical thinking in comparison with real problems and the design of solutions. "The success of the workshop confirmed the importance of LUISS playing an active role and driving force within the project MASTIS. The project represents an interesting arena of confrontation with realities that have developed complementary capabilities and who are facing similar challenges on the grounds of the digital transformation". This is the comment of Professor Spagnoletti, Executive Program Director in IT Governance and Management (EMIT) of LUISS Business School and representative of the University project MASTIS. A degree in political science, a career as a professional basketball player and now the Master in Tourism Management: Stefano’s experience, student at LUISS Business School Could you tell us about yourself and your background? My name is Stefano Rambaldi, I am 24 years old, I graduated in political science. And I am also a professional basketball player in Italian League B and League A. During this year I played in the Italian League B Championship with the University team "ASD LUISS", which helped me to obtain a scholarship to attend the Master. // Why did you choose the Master in Tourism Management? I chose this Master during my stay in Dublin where, apart from sports, I got to work at Sandymount Hotel, the Hotel sponsor of the team with which I disputed the Irish Premier League of basketball. Through this experience I became interested in tourism and the Master in Tourism Management perfectly answered my desire to grow in this field. The fact that the program was fully taught in English significantly contributed my choice. Therefore I decided to return to Italy and take the admission test for the Master and the University's sports team selections required to obtain a scholarship. What does following this Master at LUISS Business School means to you? The Master is contributed a lot to my professional growth through a learning process based on experience: the Labs and comparison with successful managers and professionals allowed me to apply the theoretical aspects of the study on concrete case studies. // Particularly through the Soft Skills Lab, the University is providing every tool you need to become a qualified candidate from the relational point of view . We learnt how to speak in public and to communicate effectively, to be able to carry on a trade, manage conflict, work as a team. These are all skills that I am developing and that are very useful in tasks that I do, sports in the first place. The training at 360 degrees that I received led me to discover areas of interests and professions that I did not know or that I had not taken into account. Attending a Master in LUISS Business School in fact does not only mean achieving a specialization but it also means learning how to be versatile and expand professional and personal horizons. What are your future projects? In the future I wish I could take care of experiential tourism focusing on the value of sustainability. I would love to be able to work on those services able to immerse the visitor in full and authentic activities in the local community , by being able to enhance the culture and respect the values. In the upcoming weeks I will have the opportunity to deepen these themes during the internship that I will perform at Rosewood Hotel in Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany. I will support the team Guest Relation in all communications with the guests at the pre-arrival time. I will let them know the tasks that are available to Hotel guests, their cost, their profitability and will cooperate to organize their stay based on their interests. To have the chance to participate in the activities of a great hotel reality like this, is for me a great opportunity to get involved and apply concretely on the field the teachings received so far. What advice do you give to who wants to enrol in this Master? I recommend it to anyone who is considering joining the Master stepping up to a path that requires a lot of effort but that will offer many opportunities to get started , define and pursue their first career goals. In LUISS Business School you will find a dynamic environment that can offer training and growth at 360 degrees. Therefore the tip I can give to prospective students is addressing this path with curiosity, trying to grasp all the stimuli and opportunities for personal and professional enrichment that this experience offers. by Mariana Alejandra Jaume Torpey, LUISS MBA Class of 2015 There’s an old saying, Tutte le strade portano a Roma (All roads lead to Rome), and in my case it has become true. I fell in love with Rome seven years ago and while I was throwing a coin to the Trevi fountain I wished with all my heart to live here at least for a year… today that dream has come true. My name is Mariana Alejandra Jaume Torpey, I’m Mexican and a specialized labor law lawyer. When my father decided to put me in charge of our legal firm I realized I didn’t have any experience or knowledge to run the whole organization as a business, so I decided to do an MBA. Besides its unique and magical location, LUISS Business School seemed like the natural choice for me: it is accredited by EQUIS and I wanted a program that was focused on delivering a solid general management education and could give me access to world-leading professors. I also wanted to attend a school that pushed people to learn soft skills and to develop an international network. All of this is LUISS Business School, so the decision was obvious… and till this day it has lived up to my expectations. Coming from America, the program has also allowed me to learn more about business in Europe, thus, expanding my vision and comprehension of how the business world works. LUISS Business School offers a mixed group of high achieving students from around the world where you socialize with people from different backgrounds. All of my colleagues are at least incredibly smart. This naturally makes you improve in order to keep up with them, and also gives you a different perspective in life and in business that helps you build a strong network of future leaders. One of the great perks you get doing your MBA at LUISS Business School is that the program is in English, but because you are in Italy, eventually you either learn or improve also your Italian. Friends are not the only source of future memories: the professors are top quality and all of them are the best in their field, making themselves approachable and available for our needs. Many of their sessions will stay with me because of their sincere life advice. Besides being international, the program is also national and attended by some Italian students. With their characteristic hospitality and warmth, they help you call Italy home. Every course is perfectly structured in order to learn and understand every concept; through every case and group work assigned my leadership style and my strengths as a leader have improved like I never imagined. As a student I am very involved in all the extracurricular activities that the school proposes and offers for our improvement: a coaching program, social and sport events, and lately one of the best experiences of my life, the opportunity to attend the CASS London Symposium (an annual event organized by Cass Business School in London providing MBA students an opportunity to meet leaders of different fields of life). I was selected to attend the event and could therefore take advantage of the good international relationships that LUISS Business School has with other top business schools. This experience was rewarding and fulfilling as it gave me an opportunity to meet a real astronaut, brilliant CEOs, political figures, role models, etc. I was fortunate to enjoy London in venues like the Science Museum, Tower Bridge, Wellcome Collection, the Royal Institution, and visited different international and important companies. On the first day of the symposium, my colleagues and I won an opportunity to make a marketing pitch to London and Partners showing how much we have learned and how well we work as a team. My MBA studies have so far been an intense eight months of hard work, but also of personal growth and learning. My advice for the future members of the LUISS Business School family is to always keep your goals and desires in mind: once the program starts, it goes by fast, so keeping your goals constantly in mind is the only way to ensure they get accomplished, and believe me – with the support of the school they will. I have travelled around the world, but Rome is still the most beautiful city I have ever seen, so start your application process. Believe me, when I tell you, here you will grow but also create memories that you never expected, memories that will be impossible to forget, memories that will be like the city: eternal. How to design a game aimed for children of Senegal; simple, replicable and that teaches the value of collaboration? Twine, stones, bottles and a few other materials available to students of the masters engaged in the laboratory organized by ERShub last May 2. An initiative coordinated by Professor Francesco Rullani, in collaboration with "Energia per i Diritti Umani Onlus" for students of specialized Master in English of LUISS Business School. Designing a game for children in Senegal with limited time and resources. Students at work at the #ERSLab pic.twitter.com/NQdBIOicIO — LUISS BusinessSchool (@LUISSBusiness) 2 maggio 2016 The main objective of the workshop is to broaden the perspectives of the students involved, make it clear to them that a good economic player must necessarily take into account the impact that its action raises in social and environmental context. A mission which characterizes the whole activity of ERShub - the hub for ethics, responsibility and sustainability - engaged in the Organization of this type for several courses of study of LUISS Business School and of the Department of business and Management. What kind of game can you conceive in order to transmit to children the value of collaboration? This was the task assigned to the students of the Master being tested in creating games aimed at kindergarten children managed by "Energia per i Diritti Umani Onlus" in Senegal and Gambia. Energia per i Diritti Umani, present during the lab with several volunteers, is an organization active in the field of development and international cooperation with the aim to defend and disseminate human rights. The organization is active in different sectors (from education to female empowerment, from training to agricultural projects) in Senegal, Gambia, India and Italy and in particular it runs six different schools in the two African countries to confront the limits of their respective school systems. During the day students were divided in groups, they worked with great commitment to design and test a game with the aim to reach an objective, not a simple task at all. How to use the few materials available? To what extent has the game managed to convey the value of collaboration? Will the game be suitable for children aged between 3 and 5 years? How to empathize into a context, the African one, that is so different from the one we are used to? After confrontation regarding these matters students have exposed the games they have created in front of a jury. “Fishermen and Fishes” was the winner of the day, created by Angela, Chiara, Angelo, Fabrizio and Arianna and awarded for its simplicity and collaboration level required for its implementation. From brainstorming to idealization, from material assembling to the rules of the game, all participants have dealt with the workshop challenges with positivity and curiosity. A special mention is given to “Les avions du Senegal” created from the group composed by Maria Ludovica, Emilia, Carlo Alberto and Parfait, it distinguished itself for the particular imaginative idea and the "engineering" abilities in the realization of the game. A day to create, challenge their selves and most of all take into consideration the positive, social and environmental impact that the economy could have. Sensitize our students in these topics it’s one of the main objectives of ERSHub because we believe that this could make them better professionals, complete and competent. And the games? In recent weeks the volunteers of "Energia per i Diritti Umani Onlus" went to Senegal and Gambia to pursue their own projects and engage with local partners. They took along the game designed by the students of the specialized Master "Fishermen and Fishes" and they made children try it to convey to them, through fun, the need and the importance of collaboration. The Master in Corporate Finance experience described by Letizia Ridolfi, class of 2015/2016. Passion for success, new challenges and a dynamic work environment pushed me to undertake a specialized Master in Corporate Finance at LUISS Business School. Nowadays, we as students and professionals are asked to reach complex goals in a challenging international market. After obtaining a master degree in Economics and business law, I realized that my academic background did not provide me with an adequate knowledge of economic and financial fields. The Master in Corporate Finance provides precious tools to boost my academic background and to succeed in my professional path. During the course, we have the chance to meet colleagues and trainers coming from different countries who share best practices, methodologies and experience that allow all of us to enrich our understanding in international business industry and to spread our network. The programme is fully taught in English, allowing me to easily learn from different culture and improve my communication and relational skills; which is an extra incentive of growing. Further, to students who wish to study abroad, this programme gives the chance to participate in the Going Global Lab in order to offer an international experience by spending a term abroad at a University campus and by enhancing international employability. During my studies I participated in the Erasmus programme and I have to say that this experience changed me a lot, I think that attending a Master with an international perspective can really be a golden opportunity for building a successful career. I decided to enrol at LUISS Business School to specialize in the Corporate Finance field, and acquire the tools to beat all market demands. I am pleased with the courses I attended so far, such as quantitative methods for finance, accounting, planning and control, desk analysis. They helped me understand and use some specific tools, software and websites through which I am now able to make benchmarking studies, budget analysis and bond yields calculation. The School puts us into contact with the business community through the Leader4Talent Lab, which aims to combine traditional lectures with speeches and testimonials from the corporate world and class courses are often held by important managers, such as BNP Paribas, GSE, and EY companies. However it is just the beginning of this enthusiastic path and I am taking on this new challenge with eagerness and curiosity in order to gain the best to achieve a future career in the financial field. The suggestion I would give to anyone that wants to enrol in this master is to undertake this course with passion, motivation, as well as the will of growing and taking on many challenges with enthusiasm and dedication, since most of the courses concern the real business life which is complex and dynamic. Doing a Master at LUISS Business School means joining a network of professionals, it requires commitment. The Master in Corporate Finance is a way to enhance professional and personal skills, challenging ourselves and going beyond personal limits. Discover the Master in Corporate Finance

On May 19, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, as part of the 4th International Mega-Projects Workshop, an evening session will be held at LUISS Business School with the Keynote Speaker Mark Thurston, Regional Managing Director at CH2M. The session will be focused on major UK programmes, with the participation of high-profile discussants. The UK has seen a renaissance in infrastructure investment in the last 10-20 years, from the new terminal 5 at Heathrow airport, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Crossrail, Thames Tideway tunnel and now High Speed 2, Crossrail 2 and potentially further airport expansion at Heathrow for a third runway. This has been noticed, not just nationally but it has also attracted global interest from academics, the engineering and construction supply chain and clients from as far as Canada, the Middle East and Asia. The draw and development of organisational capability and leadership resources, the understanding of “what good looks like” and the understanding of the critical factors that drive successful outcomes have all become much better understood and are being actively shared around the UK “major projects” community. The talk will be based on the perspective and experience of Mark Thurston and his organisation’s participation in some of these major programmes. (by Flavio Venturini, Scientific Director of the Master in Big Data Management) The Corporate Advisory Board (CAB) for the Master in Big Data Management (aka MABDA) took place last Friday at LUISS Business School with the participation of many C-Level people from public sector institutions, private companies (Telco, Finance, Media mostly), software vendors and system integrators. The aim of the CAB is to get feedback from each other on the set up of the training programme for the MABDA. The key principle on which the programme is based are cross-fertilisation between statistics, econometric subjects, technology and business acumen and management. The CAB has been the opportunity for a very interesting discussion between more than 15 participants. During the meeting the importance of the practical experience has been underlined. Students must get out of the master with a pedigree of real life analytics cases implemented using different technologies. In this context data availability for the above is not an issue, as most of the people present offered to provide the students with their own data. Some cases which are trending at the moment, according to the participants, must be known in depth by the students. Fraud analysis, customer experience, predictive maintenance are some examples. Open Data must be also known in terms of their availability as well as in terms of the ways of publishing them. Data Governance is finally considered by the CAB members of paramount importance to ensure that any data-centric initiative is successful, especially to bridge the gap between the designers of the solution, comprising the data scientists but not only, and its final users. In summary, the CAB has been a very interesting experience to get a multiple view of the Big Data challenges companies and institutions are facing at the moment. The programme 14/03/2016
